Menorca’s Olympic hope, Bet Salom, misses out on medalC.M.W. Maó Bet Salom, the 19-year old Menorcan who formed part of the Spanish rhythmic gymnastics team in Beijing, was in tears as the selection completed their hoop and club routine, a performance which saw two pieces of apparatus dropped, along with the team’s standing. A dropped rope during the team’s debut in the Olympic Games resulted in seventh place for the Spanish selection at the end of the first day, and the team needed to finish within the top eight after completing all the disciplines in order to qualify for the final. Unfortunately the errors in their hoop and club performance on the second day left them in eleventh place and ended their hopes for a medal. More information can be found here

Bet Salom returns home from Beijing
The 19-year old Menorcan girl who was part of the Spanish rhythmic gymnastics team in Beijing returned to the island last Thursday to an enthusiastic family welcome at the airport.
After relaxing with her family, going to the beach and enjoying Sant Lluís fiestas, Bet Salom will leave the island for a few days holiday elsewhere before returning to Madrid on 8th September to prepare for the World Cup which will be held in Benidorm in October.
Despite the obvious disappointment over the team’s failure to reach the Olympic finals, Bet remains optimistic about their chances in the World Cup and is looking forward to competing in London in the 2012 Olympics.
