Sant Martí - Es Mercadal Fiesta 2011
Saturday, 17th
1700 hrs. Bells ring out, and the Fabioler (herald) goes to the town hall to request permission to start the fiestas, before playing the first notes on his flute. He then collects the Caixera Sobrespoda and they go and fetch the flag from the town hall. They continue summoning the equestrian calvalcade, going round the town to fetch the Caixer Pagès and the Caixer Casat.
At the same time, the Banda de Es Mercadal, conducted by Litus Arguimbau, will parade through the town, accompanied by the giants and carnival figures, passingalong the town’s main streets, together with the Colla de Geganters de Maó.
1800 hrs. They collect the Caixer Capellà from the Plaça de lÉsglèsia and the Caixer batle (the mayor) who is to preside over the Qualcada. Once they are all present, they go to the town hall where the Caixer Batle receives the staff of office from the assistant mayor of Mercadal. They proceed through the twon to the Plaça constitució.
They will them continue through the streets of the town to the Plaza Constitució, where the traditional ‘JALEO’ will take place at 1900 hrs.
At the end they will do the ‘CARAGOL’ (three tours of the street) through the town’s central streets.
2345 hrs. in the Sant Martí church, Celebration of COMPLINE, attended by the riders and authorities. During this act the youngest riders will hand out the traditional ‘candeletes’ (small candles which are normally kept alight until arrival at the ‘Beguda de Caixers’). Once this has finished the cavalcade’s riders are invited to a feast in the old people’s home.
At the same time there will be an OFFICIAL RECEPTION in the Town Hall for the authorities and guests.
0030 hrs. Dancing with Duo Melody, at the Plaça Constitució
0100 hrs. Open air party with music supplied by Miquel and J.I. febrer, at the plaça Pare Camps, Concert preformed by Vermú, at the bar Leo, carrer Doctor Llansó
Sunday, 18th
0830 hrs. REVEILLE with the Dalt Sant Joan Bugle and Drum Band.
0900 hrs. The ‘fabioler’ sets out on the same route as the previous day to start collecting the riders from the streets in the town.
1100 hrs. in the Plaza Constitució, ‘JALEO’ and presentation of the ‘canyes verdes’ (green canes). Followed by MASS in the Sant Martí church attended by riders and authorities, during which ‘aigua-ros’ (rosewater) will be handed out. At the end, we will go to the reception put on at the Town Hall for the riders and ‘la Sala’. During this act the mayor will receive the flag from the ‘sobreposat’.
Following the reception, the riders will accompany the ‘caixer batle’ and the ‘caixercapellà’ to their respective homes to take their leave and the last note will be played on the ‘fabiol’.
During the afternoon, the youngest riders will distribute ‘aigua-ros’ to homes in the town.
