If the imposing and iconic Menorcan estate and farm of San Antoni or ‘Golden Farm’ overlooking Mahon harbour had a voice, it could recount the passage of a fascinating history, witnessed from its terrace throughout its long life.
With the original building dating back to the 13th century to the more modern Palladian style facade of the 18th century, today it is certainly one of the prominent symbols of British presence on Menorca. However, the amazing events that have unfolded over the last 700 years can only really be understood by a visit. This year, with the expertise of the Asociación Menorca Britannia, this can now be a reality with guided visits throughout the summer on selected days and times, see below.
For the first time, you can not only learn about the events which have shaped the chequered history of Menorca and of the famous people who have graced its rooms, including Admiral Lord Nelson in the summer of 1800, but also soak up the atmosphere and see the collection of antiques and artefacts within its beautifully preserved rooms. You can also find out what is the reason behind the name San Antoni and why the British in the 18th century referred to the estate as ‘The Golden Farm’. The Asociación Menorca Britannia and its English speaking guide, have all the answers.
Guided tours for 2011 will take place from May to October on Mondays and Fridays at 17.00, 18.00 and 19.00 hrs. Booking is essential, tours limited to 12 people per group, children over 12 only, no photos or mobiles inside the house. Entrance fee: €10 per person.
To book your visit, telephone Sheila Lyons on 971 366 206.
