The local elections on Sunday 22 May saw a huge swing to the right as the PP (Partido Popular) virtually swept the board, winning the majority of votes in six of the eight Town Councils, the Island Council and the Balearic Parliament. The only two municipal districts to remain in the hands of the PSOE were Es Mercadal and Es Migjorn Gran.
A total of 67,306 residents had registered to vote for the Balearic Parliament, the Island Council and the Town Councils. The figure included 1,869 foreigners who were only entitled to elect candidates for the local councils. Some 38 polling stations were set up across the island and were open from 09.00 until 20.00 hours, giving the 60% who turned out ample opportunity to vote.
The PP won 8 seats on the Island Council (46.73% of the vote) to the PSOE’s 4 (25.75%) and PSM Entesa’s 1 (11.18%), with Santiago Tadeo taking over from Marc Pons as President of CIMe. The results were duplicated in the number of Menorcan candidates elected to sit in the Balearic Parliament, the President of which will now be José Ramón Bauzá who will lead a party that, for the first time in history, has an absolute majority.
Another first is the PP’s victory in Maó which has always been held by the PSOE until now and which will also see its first female Mayor, Agueda Reynés.
It was a similar story in the other Balearic Islands with the PP winning 46.08% of the vote for the Mallorcan Island Council, giving them 19 councillors compared to PSOE’s 10 and the PSM Coalition’s 4. In Ibiza the PP’s gained 51.18% of the vote which brought them 8 seats and the parties forming the PSOE pact 5 seats. Throughout Spain, the Partido Popular made significant gains at the expense of the PSOE, receiving the most votes in all but five of the 52 provincial capitals. Despite the PSOE debacle, the Spanish President, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, has declined to bring forward the general election, due to be held in March 2013.
