Festas de Sant Joan de Ciutadella 2010
Sunday 20th June (Sheep Sunday)
9.00am The breathless moment when the first notes of the fabiol (flute) and drumbeats are played by the Fabioler (herald), standing on the balcony of the house of the Caixer Senyor, the Lord of the Fiestas. D.Manuel de Sota Martorell, c/Santissim7. S'Homo des Be, a strong young man clad in a sheepskin, with red crosses painted on forehead, hands and feet, hoists the docile ram onto his shoulders and leads the Comitiva (guild committee) off round the streets, everyone on foot and at a smart pace, following a traditional route round the town, always turning right, stopping at privileged homes to partake of traditional refreshment and give the man and his sheep a brief rest. The little procession is pursued avidly by the townspeople, all trying to touch the sheep for luck. All day long the visits continue, which include courtesy stops at the Town Hall, the Bishops palace, the 11.00am play "Foc I Fum" and the hospital. After a brief lunch break, calls are resumed until dusk, when the committee all go to the home of the Caixer Casat for a traditional beguda (super). Following this, the Caixer Capellana (priest) and the Caixer Senyor are accompanied to their homes.
Meanwhile, people have been gathering in the Avinguda de la Constitució, where piles of sacks containing empty hazelnuts are stacked, waiting.....
8.00pm The battle of hazelnuts, accompanied by music from the municipal band, their repertoire including their most famous and popular piece, the jota known as the Jaleo.
