U.S. Naval warship to take part in Farragut celebrations
The Madrid Council of the American Naval League has organised a series of events to celebrate Farragut Day, to be held on 4th June in memory of David Glasgow Farragut, the first man to receive the rank of admiral in the U.S. Navy and whose father, Jorge, emigrated to the U.S.A. from his home town of Ciutadella in 1776.
The American Naval League’s frigate USS Taylor will arrive in Menorca on the eve of the celebrations, as will the Spanish Navy’s corvette Diana, currently serving as a minesweeper.
More than 70 Spanish and U.S. civil and military guests will attend the main acts on Memorial Day, Friday, starting at 1030 hrs. with a ceremony in honour of the admiral which will take place in the Ciutadella square in which his monument has been erected. At 1230 hrs. a plaque will be unveiled in the Naval Base in Maó in memory of the sailors from the U.S. Mediterranean Squadron. This will be followed at 1345 hrs. by a ceremony in the English/American cemetery.
On Saturday there will be a concert given by the U.S. Sixth Fleet’s Five Star Brass Band at 1830 hrs. in Pla de Sa Creu, Sant Lluís. This very professional band is the Naval League’s official band in Europe.
