Plastic Bags in Menorca
Plastic bags should gradually disappear from large supermarkets on the island of Menorca as new legislation prohibits giving them away free. Most plastic bags are made of polyethylene or polythene, a by-product of petrol which does not biodegrade and is mostly disposed of by incineration which produces toxic gases. On landfill sites they take 150 years to disintegrate, and also cause deaths of marine species in the sea. Some people use reusable bags or baskets and some unload shopping directly into the car.
