Ciutadella to study a “biking” system for town’s touristsC.M.W. Maó For some weeks Ciutadella Council’s Transport Department has been studying the introduction of a tourist “biking” system in the district. The Mayor, Pilar Carbonero, has sugggested that the project could be tried out this summer, but that the system used in other Spanish cities, such as Barcelona, has had to be rejected, as this called for bicycle hirers to be residents, whereas Ciutadella Council believes that it would be more beneficial if the project were considered a tourist attraction. The principal idea is to create cultural routes within the town, Carbonero believing that Ciutadella has the necessary heritage attractions and geographical layout to make the system feasible. For the pilot project, which could run in August or September, a cultural circuit will be mapped out which will include museums, exhibitions and other points of interest in the town centre. A second phase would add routes to developed beaches, the first of which would be to Cala en Blanes, “taking advantage of the newly-opened Sa Farola cycle path”. Carbonero believes that although the project is still in its infancy it would add to Ciutadella’s status as a sustainable town as well as being of interest to European tourists both for the mode of transport and respect for the environment. The idea is that the circuit would start at the entrance to the town, where parking places would be provided in the same area that bicycles could be picked up from rental points operated by the private sector.
