Official verdict: the best way to get around Maó is by bike
C.M.W. Maó
An interesting experiment was carried out in the island’s main town in September, presided over by the Councillor for Transport, Mateu Llabrés.
Two groups of four people, each using a different mode of transport, were sent from the Parc Rubió to Plaça Colon, via a check-in point at the top of s’Arraval, to see which was the most efficient way of travelling around the town. The volunteers covered the route on foot, bicycle, motorcycle or by car.
The cyclists in the two groups arrived in Plaça Colon just five minutes after setting off. The motorcyclists took ten minutes, part of which was spent looking for a place to park, the walkers finished the trial in ten minutes, but the car drivers took almost half an hour to arrive at their destination, again due to time spent in finding a parking space and purchasing the necessary parking ticket.
All of which goes to prove that the bicycle is the best way to get around Maó, followed by ‘shanks pony’, both forms of travel that provide healthy exercise and are environmentally-friendly; the pollution-creating motorcycles and cars are best left at home when visiting the town.
