Shopping marathon prize donated to cancer charity
In the season of goodwill the PSOE (Socialist Party) in Menorca have shown their generosity by donating a prize of a 4,000 euro shopping marathon to a local charity, ASPANOB (the Balearic Association for Parents of Children with Cancer). The winning ticket in the annual draw run by the Centre Comercial Obert Ses Vinyes in Maó entitles the holder to spend up to 4,000 euros in the 20 associated shops, with a maximum of 200 euros in each.
Founded in 1987, ASPANOB runs four flats in Palma (with a fifth due to open shortly) and two in Barcelona to accommodate families from Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera with children receiving treatment for cancer in the Son Dureta Hospital, Hospital Vall d’Hebron and the Barcelona Clinic. The association also covers families’ expenses and offers psychological support.
The President and Manager of ASPANOB, Jaume Coll and Eulalia Rubio, travelled from Palma last Tuesday to take part in the marathon together with Marga Pons and Gari Escudero, two Menorcan mothers of children with cancer.
With a time limit on their shopping trip, members of the association in Menorca had planned the route in advance the previous day, studying prices and searching for items on a list
The winning ticket was presented to ASPANOB by Ernest Ribalaiga and the marathon began. The first stop was a toy shop, Jocs, where a doll and educational games swallowed up the first 200 euros, followed by Modas Magda to buy sheets, towels and an eiderdown for the new flat which will be opened near Son Dureta. Then on to Didasko for magnetic toys, paints and schoolbags, as presents for Three Kings, and Motos Jerónimo where helmets and gloves were added to the ever-growing pile of purchases. La Caixa, Sa Nostra and Banca March offered the opportunity to pay money into the association’s account, 200 euros in each bank.
Purchases at the SAT computer shop included a pen drive and several web cams as each child from ASPANOB in Son Dureta has a computer in the room to keep in touch with their school and each of the flats also has a computer.
Staff at Papers had decorated a shopping trolley with balloons and filled it with pre-ordered material ready for the shoppers. Bebé Comesa yielded a cot and bedding and Sintor a microwave, mixer and saucepans for the new flat. Footballs, basketballs and a table tennis set were obtained from Deportes Benito and two cameras from the stationers Didasko.
The association’s newly-opened office in Es Mercadal will be cleaned with products from Bicoca and insured by Groken Menorca. Vouchers for future exchange were the choice at the Hotel Capri and J&M Hairdressers.
A successful morning’s shopping for the association’s representatives who managed to complete the marathon just two minutes before the time limit.
