For the fifth consecutive month, the number of cars registered on the island has fallen, this time by 44%, the worst figure for 2008 and far above the national average which shows a 24.3% drop.
In the first five months of this year a total of 1,508 vehicles were registered, 1,068 fewer than in the same period in 2007 and the lowest figures recorded since 1993.
The president of Menorcan dealers claimed that cars were the most sensitive indicator of economic trends adding that the 44% drop in sales last month was not the result of a decline but of a grave economic crisis.
