Patient’s medical records on hand for ambulance crews
The Balearic Health Service’s 061 ambulance crews will be the first in the country to be able to access a patient’s medical records while ‘en route’, via a pioneering system which will be installed in the vehicles and which will also allow information to be passed by the crew to the emergency centre, thus saving time on the patient’s arrival at hospital.
The first unit to be fitted with the electronic records is that at Son Llàtzer in Mallorca. The system will then be extended to the vital support units in Palma, Ibiza,.the rest of Mallorca and Menorca. The electronic medical history system is based on a ‘tablet PC’ and an advanced communications system which allows total integration between the hospital and the emergency vehicle via the 061 co-ordination centre.
The emergency crews will have instant access to the patient’s records from the ambulance or at the scene of the accident itself, giving them basic information on the patient that may result in better medical treatment. In addition, any emergency treatment given to the patient before his arrival at the hospital can be logged into the system and consulted by other parties.
