Menorca recycles five times more than the national average
According to statistics for 2007 furnished by the Consortium of Residues, Menorcans recycle five times more than the average Spaniard, with the Milà plant handling more than 63 tons of waste last year. In addition to this, the use of wind to generate electricity has resulted in the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere being reduced by 18 tons.
The consortium’s report shows that the amount of rubbish produced has fallen slightly, despite an increase in the population figures. This is partly the result of citizens reusing containers and also being more conscientious in separating the rubbish they throw away. Last year the average Menorcan generated 1.57 kilograms of rubbish per day, compared to 1.65 kg. in 2006.
