Alternative routes to link Ferreries and Ciutadella
The alternative route to the main road between Ciutadella and Ferreries will be chosen from five proposals put forward. The Island Council’s technical services department has studied the possibilities offered by existing rural roads, such as the Camí Vell and the Camí des Caragolí, and other options such as lanes which are not currently in use and are not public property. These are the old section of the Camí d’en Kane, to the north of the main road which passes through both municipal districts, or lanes connecting properties to the south which link the Camí Vell with either the Costa Nova or the Camí d’Algendar.
To date there has been no information released on the definitive route involved in each of the proposals which are currently being studied and debated. The Councillor for Transport, Damià Borràs, stated that the proposals were to be presented to the Partido Popular and studied by Ciutadella and Ferreries Councils, so that the decision would be the result of a consensus of opinion.
The first meeting between the Island Council and Ciutadella Council took place at the end of September and determined that the westerly town could not be left with just one connecting road which if blocked in an emergency would leave the town isolated.
However, despite agreeing that a project would go ahead, the course that the road will take has not yet been decided. The Island Council has been collecting the proposals put forward by municipal representatives, including the UPCM who say that their proposal involves connecting the two towns via the Camí Vell with a link to Sa Costa Nova and from there via the Cala Pilar tunnel, along the old Camí d’en Kane to Sant Patrici in Ferreries.
A joint meeting will now have to be held to decide which is the best alternative of the five which have been submitted. Technical engineers will study the proposals and a decision should be made before the end of the year. Existing country lanes will be utilised wherever possible, the majority of which are public, but it will be necessary to negotiate for or appropriate extra land from private owners to make the road wider, the initial idea being that there should be enough room for two cars in each direction.
Councillor Borràs has said that, although the priority is to provide an alternative link between Ciutadella and Ferreries, the new road could have other uses, such as improving access to farms or archaeological sites or as a tourist route.
