Maó ring road carries the heaviest volume of traffic
Statistics relating to the volume of traffic on the island’s roads show that, in the majority of cases, the number of vehicles is lower than last year, the exception being some of the accesses to beaches during the ‘high’ season. The Councillor for Transport, Damià Borràs, stated that during the island’s busiest month, August, a drop of over 1,000 vehicles a day had been noted, as was also the case last year.
The main roads saw a drop in the volume of traffic, with the Me-8 (between Maó and Sant Lluís) registering the least variation. The daily average for this highway in August was 23,205 vehicles, only 345 down on the same period last year. Three registers placed on the main Maó-Ciutadella road (the Me-1) showed the volume to have dropped by between 1,260 and 1,651 vehicles compared to 2008. Similarly, between 1,000 and 1,200 fewer vehicles were recorded on the Me-2 (Maó-Es Castell), Me-6 (Sant Lluís-Es Castell), Me-7 (Maó-Fornells) and Me-15 (Es Mercadal-Fornells).
The roads leading to tourist areas such as Cala Galdana, Cala en Porter or Es Grau tell a different story, with the volume of traffic during the height of the summer increasing in comparison with 2008, as was also the case with the Maó and Ciutadella ring roads.
Readings were taken for the first time on the Ronda Maó (RM) for 24 hours a day over a period of one week on alternate months and showed that the road was used by an average 28,292 vehicles per day in May, 30,714 in July and 27,679 in September, meaning that it has replaced the Me-8 as the busiest road on the island.
Ring roads and beach roads apart, 2009 has seen a continuation of the drop in number of vehicles which started the previous year; a drop attributed by Borràs to the economic situation, a shortage of hire cars this summer and an increased use of public transport which has seen the number of passengers rise from one to two million between 2003 and 2005.
