September tourist figures halve over eight years
The number of foreign tourists attracted to the island last month was 11,000 down on September 2008 and only half the figure recorded in the same month in 2001.
Although Spanish tourism remained stable compared to last year this was not enough to avoid the “financial results of the season being frankly bad” in the words of the association for small and medium sized businesses on the island, PIME.
Last month a total of 83,283 foreign tourists came to Menorca, compared to 94, 182 in September 2008 and 161,530 in 2001.
The majority of the arrivals last month were British (63,336) but the figure continues to drop each year; in 2001 there were 108,791 visitors to the island from the U.K.
Although the number of German tourists (8,582) was only slightly lower than last year’s 8,210, there is a marked difference to the 32,718 recorded in 2001.
There was little variation in the number of Spanish passengers arriving on the island in September, 62,264 compared to 62,359 in 2008, but it has to be remembered that this figure not only includes tourists but also residents returning to the island.
