Seven projects proposed for new government funding
Menorca has proposed seven projects to be funded under the ‘Ley de Barrios’ (District Law) introduced by the Balearic Government, more than any of the other islands. The law will provide grants of up to one million euros to local councils to carry out projects that are urban, architectural, economic or social in nature, such as removing visible cables, restoring facades and improving or creating green zones.
In Menorca, all the town councils have applied for this aid, with the exception of Es Castell which has declined to do so as it would cost the council money. Although the ‘Ley de Barrios’ provides the finance for between 80% and 90% of the project presented, the remainder has to be found by the town council and Es Castell currently lacks the necessary funds.
A budget of 12.5 million euros has been set aside for the ‘Ley de Barrios’ until 2010 and this year the town councils are being restricted to one project per district. A commission will evaluate the projects, awarding points for different aspects; a minimum of 20 points being needed to ensure that the finance is forthcoming. The decision on which projects will receive the aid requested will be made this month.
