Wool stays on island
For the first time in the last one hundred years none of the wool provided by Menorca’s sheep will be marketed on the Peninsula. The low price this year, of just eleven centimos a kilo, means it is no longer viable to transport the wool to Barcelona. In the past it has gone to Barcelona for distribution to the textile manufacturers of Cataluña. Twenty five years ago wool was making 100 pesetas a kilo. Competition from Asia is blamed for the dramatic fall in prices.
