Working to create a public internet network on island
The Island Council hopes that the first quarter of 2010 will bring approval from the Telecommunications Marketing Commission to put out to tender the management of the public network that will bring high speed internet to the whole island.
The Balearic Government is already working on the installation of the necessary infrastructure (telecommunications towers and the connecting equipment) and the Island Council is drawing up the list of conditions which will regulate the submission of tenders from private operators.
According to Councillor Susana Gomila, whose department is promoting the “Menorca Accesible” project which will bring the new technology within reach of all the population, it will be necessary to install ten base stations, which will retransmit the signal using wireless technology, in order to guarantee full internet coverage for the island. These will be sited in Binibèquer Nou, El Toro, S’Enclusa, and the Maó and Ciutadella industrial estates. In order to cover the tourist areas, the other five will be installed in S’Algar, Sa Mesquida, Es Grau, Cala Llonga and Cala Morell. The Balearic Government is spending 2.5 million euros on the infrastructure which will later be handed over to the Island Council.
The agreement between the two authorities states that the Island Council will be responsible for paying for the equipment which will connect the transmission towers with the users, which will cost in the region of 450,000 euros. The first three towers will coincide with existing installations on El Toro, S’Enclusa and Binibèquer Nou for digital television and should bring high speed internet access to around 10,500 users.
