Recycled compost
The Milá plant, to which our waste is taken to be recycled or landfilled, has increased the amount of compost that it produces from organic waste. 25,000 tonnes is now being produced each year, 8,000 tonnes of which is being sold at 2 euros per tonne.
The compost is used for the propagation of seedlings in plant pots; as a layer of soil spread over poorer quality soil, to allow moisture to be retained whilst providing better drainage; and it is being mixed with water to produce a liquid fertiliser.
The environmental organisation, GOB, is also using the compost as a substratum of soil in its nurseries where rosemary, mallow and strawberries are being grown along with a variety of herbs.
The nutrient value of the compost is comparable to similar commercial brands.
