Leaks in the system cause loss of 22% of drinking water
According to the Regional Ministry of the Environment, 22% of the drinking water used in Menorca is lost through leaks in the system, resulting in 3 million cubic metres being wasted every year. In Alaior, Ciutadella and Es Migjorn Gran the percentage lost drops to below 10%. In the Balearic Islands as a whole the volume of water lost amounts to 33 million cubic metres.
The Balearic Government and Island Council of Menorca have signed an agreement whereby 445,000 euros will be made available for improvements to the drinking water system on the island.
Town Councils will receive subsidies to finance studies to determine where the leaks are so that repairs can then be carried out, action that is “fundamental for the sustainable management of water resources and the saving of water in a Mediterranean region such as ours” according to the Regional Minister for the Environment, Miquel Àngel Grimalt.
