The Council wants to avoid further cuts in the price of milk
The Department of Economics, Island Council is considering the implementation of appropriate measures to prevent falling prices of milk and curds that dairies Isla paid to farms. In early July the Consell de Menorca Agrari will meet to discuss the situation.
The Economics Department has expressed concern over recent months by the significant drop in the price of milk in Europe. The last significant drop in the price of milk occurred in mid-March, when the restrictive measure COINGA announced days before the holding of the Fair's Camp, Alaior. Since then, Unió de Consell insular Pagesos asked to activate the appropriate strategy to freeze the price of milk, as acknowledged yesterday the union's general secretary of agriculture, Antoni Moll.
The Island Council has always advocated the strategic nature of the agricultural sector on the island declared a Biosphere Reserve, and thus the livestock-oriented milk production, so it seeks a stable situation in the prices paid to farmers for the development of their products. Since last March, the Department of Economics has been in contact with COINGA to discuss the problem of the price of milk, knowing that this is an issue that is regulated by the market. Also negotiations with Kraft to get reasonable prices for the producers of curd, at least until the end of the year.
