Spanish edition of British medic’s book
The first translation into Spanish of a book written by a Scottish physician in the eighteenth century was presented on Saturday on the Illa del Rei.
“Observations on the epidemical diseases on Minorca, from the year 1744 to 1749” was written by George Cleghorn during his 13-year stay on the island while serving as a medic with an infantry regiment, and was first published in 1751. Nine editions of the treatise were published in English, German and French, but this is the first to be printed in Spanish.
Some years ago the Hospital Foundation acquired a first edition of the work from Canada for 1,300 dollars and now possesses three other first editions.
