British Ambassador pays a flying visit to the island
C.M.W. Maó
Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain, Mrs. Denise Holt, and her husband, David, paid a brief informal visit to Menorca at the weekend, the first time that they had been to the island during their two years in Spain. The Ambassador explained that she had wanted to come to visit the Honorary Consul, Deborah Hellyer, and learn more about her work here, as well as to meet the British colony and “get to know Menorca” and its history,
much of which is shared with Britain.
Although the trip only lasted from Friday to Sunday, the Holts managed to visit La Mola, Es Grau, S’Albufera, Cap de Cavelleria, Sanitja, Monte Toro and the Illa del Rei as well as attending a wine tasting party at the Bodega Binifadet, Sant Lluís, in company with Deborah Hellyer and her husband Carlos Coll and the British Consul from Palma, Paul Abrey and his wife Mar, at which they were introduced to various members of the British community on the island.
Crisis and Tourism
Her tour of the island allowed the Ambassador to see Menorca’s potential for the next generation of tourists, the ecotourists, and she was impressed with the way the environment was being looked after.
Asked whether the recession had affected tourism, Mrs. Holt replied “We will have to see. Tour operators say reservations have dropped more than 10% in Spain overall, up to 20% in some places”. She added that the exchange rate meant that the number of tourists going to places outside the euro zone was increasing and that the weather in England during the summer months would be a factor, but the good forecast may mean that people stay at home.
