The measures adopted this year to counteract the plague of Lymantria Dispar (Gypsy Moth) caterpillars are “well in hand and effective” according to the Regional Department of the Environment. The proof of the campaign’s success can be seen in the zones which have already been treated and where leaves are once again appearing on the trees giving the areas an overall green appearance in contrast to the greyish-brown colour dominant in parts which cannot be treated, such as environmentally protected zones, where the caterpillars have defoliated a large proportion of the trees. To date, 2,299 hectares of holm-oak woods have been treated from the air and land. Christine M. Watterson - Maó read more...

Aerial fumigation to start this week
Weather permitting, aerial fumigation will begin this week in Menorca against the Lymantria dispar, the Gypsy Moth which is currently in the caterpillar stage of life.
Land fumigation started last week around inhabited areas and in the holm oak wood next to the school in Ferreries.
An ecological product, "bacillus thuringiensis" will be used in both land and aerial sprayings.
Later in the year traps will be hung in the trees to catch the adult moths. In addition artificial nests will be placed to encourage insectivorous birds and also shelters for bats, both of which are natural predators of the Gypsy Moth.
