Fons Menorquí to provide 1.2 million euros for Third World
C.M.W. Maó
The Fons Menorquí has approved a budget of 1,222,978 euros to finance projects of co-operation in the development of various southern countries, with the aim of helping to better living conditions in parts of the planet suffering extreme poverty. At the same time activities will be held in Menorca to make people aware of the need to correct the imbalance and inequality between rich and poor countries.
The majority of the fund’s income is provided by public bodies; 99% coming from the Balearic Government, Island Council and the eight Town Councils, the remainder from individual donations and private entities.
The fact that there are nearly 900 million starving people in the world and the need to provide them with the basic necessities justify the efforts made by local authorities to continue their support despite the current economic climate.
In the first meeting held this year, the fund unanimously approved 25 projects, with preference given to countries in Africa, Central America, South America and India, at a total cost of 848,282.24 euros. Between now and the end of the year approval will be given to more projects until the total sum available has been used. Aimed at providing basic cover in social sevices and education, the projects include the construction of houses, scholarships, literacy classes for women, promoting production systems and microcredits, the storage of drinking water and improving hygiene conditions.
A large majority of the projects are targeted at women and children as these are the sectors of society which are the most vulnerable.
