Proposals for roads in Maó-Es Castell-Sant Lluis triangle
C.M.W. Maó
Amongst the proposals included in the draft Road Plan are improvements to eleven sections of the road network in the south-east of the island. Two of those which are centred on the triangle formed by Maó, Es Castell and Sant Lluís concern an orbital road for Maó and a bypass for Sant Lluís, but these will be subject to the results of future analyses of traffic density and habits.
The Maó orbital road will connect the Bintaufa zone, the road to the Mateu Orfila Hospital and the airport road and will run between the Camí d’en Claudis (which will not be affected) and the airport road. The other proposal in this area is for a road that will link the Bintaufa zone, the Sant Lluís industrial estate and the Son Rossinyol zone (at the beginning of S’Ullastrar). This would run to the west of the town of Sant Lluís and would connect with the district’s southern coast.
Eight of the projects contained in the Road Plan are currently in hand: improvements to the Maó-Sant Lluís road and hospital road which include providing hard shoulders and a bicycle lane, trees and streetlighting; the construction of a road linking Sant Lluís industrial estate with the Sant Lluís-Es Castell road, relieving the traffic of heavy vehicles through Ses Barraques; improvements to the Me-6 (Sant Lluís to Es Castell road) levelling the road and straightening bends, constructing roundabouts at the entrances to Trebalúger and Sol del Este and incorporating a cycle lane; alterations to the Ronda in Maó; creating a cycle lane on the Me-2 (Maó to Es Castell road); improvements to the Avinguda de sa Pau; improving safety on the road between Sant Lluís and Binibèquer as it passes through the hamlet of S’Ullastrar; improving the public transport service between Maó and Sant Lluís and laying on a bus service linking Maó-Es Castell-Sant Lluís-Maó that would run every 30 minutes.
The Plan’s second phase involves widening and improving the Trepucó road (Me-4) to the Maó-Es Castell road, making it suitable for heavy vehicles. This project includes a bypass around the archaeological site and residential area of Trepucó.
