S’Hort des Frares opens eight years after work commenced
C.M.W. Maó
The Paseo S’Hort des Frares was finally inaugurated last week, eight years after the start of the project and five months after the work was completed, the delay in the formal opening of the pathway being attributed to problems with the agendas of the Ministry of Housing representatives. Finally, it was the Government delegate to the Balearics, Ramón Socías, who opened the new path.
Originally estimated as an 18-month long project, delays were caused by technical and financial problems as well as by the need to shore up the cliffs in this area. The initial budget of 35 million pesetas rose to a total of 105 million pesetas due to technical difficulties with the terrain.
The terraced pathway connects the old centre of Maó with the port, dropping a total of 25 metres, providing a useful link between the two sections of the town.
The construction and landscaping of the path and terraces is part of a much larger project, the restoration of the Museum of Menorca and its surrounds.
