Insistence on Catalan could lose the island some doctorsC.M.W. Maó Some of the doctors working in the public health sector in Menorca have verbally expressed to the head of the Balearic Doctors’ Union (SIMEBAL) their decision to leave their jobs and the island if the Balearic Government goes ahead with its plan to insist on Catalan as a requisite for a job in IB-Salut. This declaration to Alejandro Fernández follows a similar statement in writing signed by 39 specialists from the Hospital Can Misses in Ibiza sent to SIMEBAl’s representative in Ibiza. The Menorcan doctors’ declaration was made public by Fernández during a demonstration last Wednesday by some 60 workers at the Mateu Orfila Hospital protesting against the decree approved by the Balearic Government the previous week which requires health workers in the islands to have level B in Catalan. They were also against the moratorium announced by the Government which gives doctors and nurses (who are licensed or have diplomas) three years in which to reach the required level in Catalan, feeling this to be unfair on other workers.
