The Brotherhood of Our Lady of Sorrows-La Soledad, Maó is celebrating the centenary of its refoundation, held in 1909, although the current leadership of the organization, including the older brother, José María Vidal Ulldemolins and Former elder brother, Jose Vila Gomila have heard that the guild existed as such in the seventeenth century.
Turning to 1909, then the ladies of Motta, daughter of the consul of the Two Sicilies, had an image of the Virgen de los Dolores, and she formed a step, carried shoulder 12 carriers. Nine years later, in 1918, was organized by the guild as we see it today, with 16 carriers. That year, an image is responsible, through Mrs. Catalina Narvaez and his daughter, which, for friendship, persuaded Doña Francisca Escudero Martorell, widow Orfila, to bear a more modern, reminiscent of Andalusia.
The civil war resulted, as in many others, a lull in the activity of the guild. Previously, according Ulldemolins and Gomila, the Republic had prohibited religious acts take place outside the churches, for which the processions carrying the image of Our Lady of Sorrows were held inside the church of Santa Mary, seat of the brotherhood. The very struggle of 1936-39 resulted in the burning step and the image and only two pieces were saved, yes, very important and why the guild had a very special affection.Specifically, the mantle remained intact and clothing or "apron" of the Virgin, embroidered in gold, pearls and precious metals on natural silk, which was guarded by Mrs Frances Martorell.
In 1940, he began to build a new step, which was blessed on April 14, 1941, along with the new image, also donated by Francisca Martorell. The carpenter who built the step was Lorenzo Olives. That same year of 1941 drew up the statutes of the confraternity, which were reformed in 1957.
