No takers for over half of the Cala Galdana concessions
C.M.W. Maó
Ferreries Council put out seven beach concessions in Cala Galdana to tender this year, including sunbeds, kiosks and nautical activities. In the first auction the Council received offers for only three of the concessions (two beach bars and a boat service), leaving four still to be awarded.
The President of the association of beach concessions, CONCEMENORCA, explained that the situation was due to the constant fall in tourist figures since the year 2003 and a poor outlook for this season - 30% fewer tourists and with less spending money. Manuel Alonso’s association is to ask the Council to reduce the amount charged by 40% compared to last year. Ferreries has already lowered the prices asked by between 8% and 18%, which would lower the municipal district’s income from this source from 2008’s 950,000 euros to 800,000 euros. However, CONCEMENORCA considers this is not sufficient and that the reduction should be in the region of 20%.
The Council has now decided to put the concessions out to tender once again, this time at 10% less than the original asking price.
