Doctors’ unions call 29 days of strikes in Balearic centres
Doctors’ unions agreed last week to call a total of 29 days of strikes after two weeks of talks with IB-Salut (the Balearic public health service) ended with no agreement being reached. In Menorca, the strikes will be on 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th and 28th April and then on every Thursday in May and June, starting on 8th May and continuing on 15th, 22nd, and 29th and then 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th June Christine M. Agreement between IB-Salut and doctors’ union ends strikeThe Balearic Health Service, IB-Salut, and the doctors’ union, SMLB, reached a preliminary agreement last Wednesday ending the medical strikes which have affected the Balearic Islands over the last two months. The improvements to working conditions and pay will cost the health service nine million euros. The agreement grants the union the majority of its demands regarding the hourly rate of pay for duty doctors, ‘double insularity’, and extra payments dependent on the number of patients on a doctor’s list. Following the publication in this newspaper in May of a letter written by Dr. Joan Carulla, a row has broken out between members of the Oncology Department at the Mateu Orfila and the hospital management which has led to the dismissal of Dr. Joan Carulla as head of the department. This action was followed by two members of his team, psychologist Maria José Pérez and oncologist Catalina Abal resigning from their positions and a possibility that a third, Dr. Pilar Díaz might do likewise.
