The Fiestas de Sant Gaietà (Llucmaçanes)
The first weekend in August.
SATURDAY OF THE FIESTA
The gathering together of the horses will occur at the time decreed in the fiestas programme, in front of “Es Clot des Forn”. Beforehand, the “Fabioler” and the “Caixer Fadrí” will go to the Neighbourhood Association office where the “Caixer Batle” will be waiting, in order to ask him for authorization to form the “Colcada”. At the same time, a member of the Neighbourhood Association Committee will hand over the flag to the “Caixer Fadrí”, at which moment the first sounds of the “fabiol” are heard.
The ”Fabioler” and the “Caixer Fadrí” will gather together the rest of the “Caixers” and all together will go to look for the “Caixer Batle” and the “Caixer Capellà”, who will be waiting in front of the church and at this point the mace of office will be handed to the “Caixer Batle” by a member of the Mahon town council. Then the traditional route will be followed.
To enter the church, two lines of riders will form in the following order: the “Fabioler” and the “Caixer Fadrí” will head the group, followed by the “Junta de Caixers”, “Caixers” from Llucmaçanes, the “Caixers” from outside the municipality and finally, the “Caixer Pagès”, the “Caixer Batle” and the “Capellana”.
Once the two lines are formed, the “Caixer Batle”, the “Caixer Capellà” and the “Caixer Pagès” will pass through the centre and enter just before the “Fabioler” and the “Caixer Fadrí” with the flag; then the rest of the “Caixers” enter in formation. The “Fabioler” enters playing the tune of the “Colcada” and all the “Caixers” position themselves at their reserved places.
During the “Completes”, and at the appropriate moment, the “aigua-ros” is handed out to the participants, whilst the “Fabioler” plays the traditional melody.
Leaving the church is done in the same fashion, though the “Caixer Batle” and the “Caixer Capellà” are the last ones to leave. Once outside, the “Caixer Batle” and the “Caixer Capellà” will wish each other “suerte y ventura” (good luck and good fortune) for the “Jaleo” and on a signal, the “Caixers” break formation and go to find their respective horses so that the “Jaleo”can begin.
Once the “Colcada”, is formed and after a first “Caragol”, the “Fabioler” and the “Caixer Fadrí” leave the flag at the authorities’ rostrum. When the “Caixer Batle” reaches the band, he will give permission to the conductor to start to play the “Jaleo”.
In total, three circuits will be made. At the last one, the “Caixer Batle” and the “Caixer Capellà” will take their leave. The rest of the “Colcada”, once the flag has been collected, will take their leave by saying farewell to the “Caixer Capellà” and then to the “Caixer Batle”.
DÍA DE SANT GAIETÀ (day of Saint Gaietà)
On Sunday, the gathering together of the riders will be the same as the previous day, as will be the entering and leaving the church. The “Jaleo”, on the other hand, will only make two full circuits because during the third the “Caixers” will be presented with the green reed and the silver teaspoon.
Following the usual short route, the “Colcada” will position themselves all together in the square in a horseshoe shape. This is when the band plays the Llucmaçanes song. The “Caixer Batle” and the “Capellana” will say farewell and afterwards the “Colcada” will pass by and greet the “Caixer Capellà” and the “Caixer Batle”, then the formation breaks up.
About fifteen minutes later, under the shade of the square’s pine tree, the riders will once again gather and all go together in formation to have the traditional Drink.
The order of entry will be as follows: the “Fabioler”, the “Caixer Batle”, the “Caixer Capellà”, the “Caixer Pagès”, the “Caixer Fadrí” with the flag, the “Caixer” of the “Junta”, the authorities and the rest of the riders.
Once everyone is gathered, the “Caixer Batle” will say a few words of thanks to the riders and hand over the mace of office to the Mayor of Mahon (or his representative).
Instead the “Caixer Fadrí” will hand over the flag to the president of the Neighbourhood Association, who will invite the participants to have a drink and say farewell to the “Caixers” until the following year. With this act, the protocol acts related to the “Colcada” are deemed to be at an end.
