After having been used to quarry sandstone, the Quarries of S'Hostal, a landscape of monumental proportions with a three-dimensional, sculptural beauty, have been redeveloped by Líthica and are today a very popular cultural centre.

The two distinct methods of quarrying the sandstone have created two contrasting areas:

The old manually-worked quarries form a labyrinth of stone and vegetation between inclined walls and irregular shapes where the s'Hostal gardens are being developed to include a botanical circuit lined with native plants and a medieval garden.

The modern quarries are vast, impressive spaces dominated by precise vertically dressed walls forming a cubical amphitheatre where concerts are held in the summer.

The Pedreres S'Hostal to be able to host concerts

The Pedreres of S'Hostal in Ciutadella, may re-accommodate concerts, theatrical events and activities within three years.
This time is estimated to have Líthica all permits and ready to leave the work of adapting as necessary.

The adaptation of Pedreres S'Hostal in order to accommodate mass events is possible with the help of the Ministry of Culture and Heritage Island and the city of Ciutadella, which yesterday signed a partnership agreement with the president of Líthica, Laetitia Lara. The Council will provide 45,000 euros and 25,000 other Consistorio for the next four years. Half of the endowment, 35,000 euros, for the adaptation of Pedreres S'Hostal of a cultural infrastructure that can host events in conditions. According to Lara, it is necessary to first obtain the general interest, being a space in rural land, then will the proposed activity and a license is required. The last step is the implementation of the works to mark the project.

The enclosure should be appropriate to the provision of services and infrastructure such as public toilets, fire extinguishers, and backstage elements to ensure public safety. However, the Minister of Culture and Heritage, Joan Lluís Torres, affects that "if the quarry were a factory, the proposed activity would be easy, but being a unique project shall conform to the characteristics of the site"

New opening times at Lithica quarries

Lithica has organised various activities and events this summer at s’Hostal Quarries, near Ciutadella.

Three workshops in ‘marès’ (the stone mined from the quarry) have been arranged in July and August; t’ai chi classes will be run twice a week; and a Full Moon Fiesta will be held on Friday 6th August with musical entertainment.

During July and August the quarries will be open for visits Monday to Saturday 0930-1430 hrs. and 1630 hrs. until sunset, Sundays 0930-1430 hrs.
