Rotary Club of Menorca Charter Night Dinner
The Rotary Club of Menorca celebrated their Charter Night at the Minerva Restaurant, Maó, on Saturday 17th May.
One hundred and seventeen people enjoyed a superb dinner. They were entertained by Elements, their band for the evening. In addition entertainment was provided in a novel manner by Beverley Ashton and her casino, which provided diners with an unusual bonus. Although not entitled to win money, the casino gave enjoyment to all. Funds raised added to the total for the evening that reached 3,500 euros.
These funds were raised to the benefit of Lifestraw, the drinking straw invention which is enabling many thousands of people throughout the world to benefit from the ability to drink clean water. The Rotary Club of Menorca has championed a great deal of fundraising for this worthy cause. 25,000 euros have been donated during the current Rotary year.
The straws work on an ingenious system of filtering the originally impure water and making it safe to drink. Each straw is capable of filtering 700 litres, sufficient for one person’s annual needs in the Developing World. The straws only weigh 95 grammes, making them ideal for air transport. They have a cord which users can put round their necks for safe storage and carrying.
