Plaza del Príncep. Changes will take place through winter
J.S.N. Maó
Maó Council has started the procedure to totally reform the Plaza del Príncep in the town. With the long term objective of closing off the historic centre of Maó to motor traffic, they plan to transform this area from Plaza Espana as far as the Portal de Mar into a pedestrian zone. The plan is to make the whole area into a paved area with a limited carriageway for slow moving vehicles. It would allow access for vehicles loading and unloading as well as providing space for vehicles with disabled passengers.
The scheme is expected to start in the early part of 2009, following the completion of work in calle S’Araval. The work will necessitate the diversion of traffic in various points of the town centre. The flow of traffic through Plaza del Príncep will be one way, downwards. The flow through calle Portal de Mar will also be one way, in an upward direction.
This week the work in calle S’Arraval will proceed to a second phase that will cause the road to be closed. A diversion will operate via calle des Forn.
