Possibility of the King opening Maó school
Speculation has been growing on the possibility of the King officiating at the inauguration of the 2008/2009 academic year at the Joan Ramis i Ramis School in Maó. It would appear that the Balearic Islands has been selected for the official act but there has been no confirmation as yet that the Maó school will be the scene, as other educational establishments in Mallorca are also possible candidates. A final decision will be made at a meeting in Palma at the end of the month, but will probably not be made public immediately, for security reasons.
The official inauguration of the academic year is an annual event organised by the Ministry of Education which takes place in a selected school and for the last few years has been carried out by a high-ranking member of the Royal Family. This year it is due to take place on 16th September, a day after classes start in the Balearic Islands.
