Island’s police celebrate the feasts of their patron saints
Frederik Naumann Sant Lluís
Friday October 3rd saw the Feast of the Archangel Saint Raphael, Patron Saint of the Policía Local, Spain’s municipal police force. Thus declared the ‘Day of the Local Police’, Saint Raphael’s Feast saw nationwide functions taking place to honour the work of municipal police agents, including a central ceremony held in Es Migjorn Gran for the Local Police of Menorca’s eight municipalities. Apart from the presence of numerous police agents the function was attended by representatives from politics and authorities, including the Island Council’s president Marc Pons and Maria Ángeles Leciñena, Interior Minister of the Balearic Islands’ Government.
In his address Marc Pons praised the “responding capacity of the police with regard to ensuring the citizens’ rights”, stressing the value of the Local Police’s work not least in the context of their mediatory function in cultural conflicts. Pons described the municipal police’s tasks as “increasingly complex in a pluralistic and diversified society”.
Maria Ángeles Leciñena made a particular point of stressing the importance of co-operation, co-ordination and information exchange not only between the Local Police but also with other security forces, for example through the application of internet-based communication tools.
The celebration saw four retired Local Police agents – two from Maó and two from Sant Lluís – being decorated with commemorative insignia honouring their work. This act was followed by a trophy presentation to the winners of sports competitions held between Menorca’s Local Police forces. A charity lottery organised on the occasion of Saint Raphael’s Feast resulted in 3,100 euros being raised for the Menorca Association Against Cancer.
Rotating around the island’s eight municipalities, next year’s Saint Raphael’s Day festivities
are due to be held in Ciutadella.
