Possibly two of the best-known bays on the island, as they usually occupy pride of place in travel guides and photographs of them are often used to promote Menorca. Both are surrounded by luxuriant pine groves and have tempting turquoise-coloured waters.
Macarella, the easier to reach, has a beach bar, whilst her smaller sister, Macarelleta, is a small bay usually used by nudists which can be reached by walking across spectacular cliffs. In order to reach the bays, the Camí de Sant Joan de Missa must be taken from Ciutadella. On arriving at the car park there is a walk of approximately 20 minutes along a path. A few years ago payment was obligatory, and nowadays some visitors still prefer to pay six euros and park just a few metres from Macarella, although this is not recommended as it is a protected natural area.
