13% Increase In British Tourists To Menorca
With the opening of two new routes to Menorca this summer season and the uncertain situation in the North African destinations, the number of British tourists to the island is expected to increase by 13% compared to last year’s figure of 385,000.
Aberdeen and Southampton have now been added to the other 19 British airports which offer flights to Menorca (Belfast, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Doncaster, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Norwich and Nottingham).
TUI-UK also expects to increase the number of tourists it brings from Britain, from the 164,000 stipulated in the agreement signed with the Island Council to 168,000. Last year the tour operator also exceeded its commitment, bringing in 2,000 more holidaymakers than the 158,000 it had agreed.
Since the end of the last tourist season, licences to the value of €7.025 million have been granted to hotels and tourist complexes to improve their accommodation. Over 90% of this sum will be used to upgrade two hotels from three to four stars, the latter being the most popular category amongst the island’s visitors. A third hotel has requested permission to build a Spa circuit and a rural hotel intends to construct a gymnasium for its clients. Two tourist apartment complexes are to add public rooms to their establishments and remove any architectural barriers.
The island’s hotels have been asked by tour operators to target a specific market, whether it be families, gay couples, sports enthusiasts or those seeking to relax, to meet the demands of today’s holidaymakers.
To this end, the Hotel Audax in Cala Galdana, which until now has concentrated on the relaxation and 'wellness' aspects, has decided that it will not admit children this season and that its clientele will be limited to adults only.
On the other hand, the Hotel Royal in Son Bou is focused on family holidays with facilities for all ages to enjoy.
