Centralised control for all island’s taxis planned to be operational next summer
The committee working on the creation of a centralised command point for all the island’s taxis will today present its report to the Island Council for approval which in turn will pass the document on to the Balearic Government for its approval and, by the start of the next tourist season, all the island’s taxi services should come under a central control.
According to the Councillor for Transport, Damià Borràs, the new set-up will maximise the use of the island’s 100 taxis and increase their profitability. The Councillor insists that the taxi drivers are in favour of the idea of a centralised control, which will be run by a private company under rules laid down by the Island Council. “The idea is that nobody can manipulate this service in their favour, and that each booking will be given to the nearest taxi, with no favouritism shown”, he claims.
Customers booking through the centre will pay an extra 1.15 euros to cover the quota paid by the taxidrivers for the maintenance of the control centre.
The technology necessary for the taxis and centre is virtually in place, it is now only a question of completing the complicated official paperwork before the centre can become a reality.
