Lift connecting town and port could be ready by next spring
Mayor, Vicenç Tur, stated that at the next meeting of the consortium, formed by the Town Council, Island Council and Port Authorities to deal with the problems of the cliff face, a budget would be allocated for work to start on making the cliff face safe, a project which has already been drawn up and which will cost around 150,000 euros. This work will start in the autumn and, at practically the same time, the construction of a panoramic lift will begin; the scheme having already been agreed with municipal engineers and to cost around 300,000 euros.
The lift will be installed on a 187 sq. m. plot adjacent to the Thai Country Café which was ceded to the Council five years ago by Bernand Fechner, owner of the Thai restaurant.
The old house on the plot next to that to be used for the lift will be demolished and a block of small apartments built in its place. The consortium will take charge of making the cliff face behind this plot safe (at the same as on the neighbouring plot), although the landowner will be responsible for payment for the work.

The Mayor of Máo, Vicenç Tur, announced last week that the next project to ensure that the cliffs in the port of Maó are safe and the installation of a lift linking the port and town will be carried out at the same time at an overall cost of 700,000 euros.
The section of cliff in question, on plots 269 and 270 Moll de Llevant has a budget of 380,000 euros for the work which is expected to take eleven weeks to complete. Permissions are still awaited for the project which will be executed after summer has finished so as not to interfere with the tourist season. A further 120,000 euros will be spent this year on smaller projects to strengthen other parts of the cliff face in the case of emergency action being needed.
At the same time the panoramic lift will be installed on land ceded to the Council by the owner of the restaurant which formerly occupied the plot. The project to install the lift will cost 340,000 euros and should be completed within two months. Again, the work will start after the tourist season so the lift should be completed this year.
