I stayed at Hostal Jeni for one week Wednesday 10 June to Wednesday 17 June and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone.
It is a small hotel in Es Mercadel – for those of you who do not know, Es Mercadel is the centre point for the island, therefore wherever you want to visit is not far in any direction.
This was an entirely different time on Menorca as I spent the entire time in the town, apart from going to Es Castell and Son Vilar, preferring to mingle with the locals and get the feel of real Menorca as opposed to the coastal resorts where I have spent many a year.
I was half board in a single room, although my room consisted of a double bed, two bedside cabinets, dressing table with mirror, dressing table seat, wardrobe with security safe, full size mirror on wardrobe, cable TV which picked up BBC1, BBC2, ITV3, Sky News English programmes and plenty of Spanish and a couple of German channels, table for putting suitcase on, ensuite shower room, personal air conditioning/heating, French windows, shutters, balcony.
The rooms are situated on first floor and second floor with reception, breakfast room, dining room, bar, additional seating and tables for drinking and eating, lounge area, TVs x 2, computers with internet all being on ground floor. A small lift serves all floors. The hotel closes the doors at 11pm so if you return after this hour, you have a key to enter around the side.
Breakfast is served 7 am – 10.30 am and there is plenty of it – bread, French bread, cereal, croissants, pain au chocolat, do-nuts, assorted pastries, jams, butter, cheese, ham, salami, chorizo, fresh fruit, yoghurts, coffee, milk, tea, juices, water, toaster.
Dinner is served 8 pm – 10.30 pm and could be taken either in the dining room or as most people preferred in the additional seating in the bar and lounge area as there was more going on here – by that I mean I could people watch! You could choose A la Carte if you were only on Breakfast option or as most people did choose from the exceptionally good value Menu del Dia which is what I chose from being on the half board option. 3 courses with a choice from 4 in each course, plus bread, water and wine – not a glass but a whole bottle of each is included! It is waiter service at dinner whereas breakfast is self service, buffet style.
The hotel is frequented by locals which is a very good sign and the local police would even drop in during the day.
Overall the hotel is very clean, friendly and very good value for money and I would definitely come back here. It is but stones throw from the centre of Mercadel, took me all of 2 minutes to walk to the favourite bar Crises, and only one minute to the square.
If you want something different from the usual coastal resorts, try Mercadel and the Jeni, you will not be disappointed.
